Summary

Awaken at the AMA  is a program for individuals with dementia and their families or professional-care partners.

Description

Awaken at the AMA  is a program for individuals with dementia and their families or professional-care partners. The first program of its kind in the Albany area, Awaken is an interactive gallery-discussion program with an artmaking component that will build community and offer an escape for those most vulnerable to illness. Being safe in a cultural environment with an opportunity for a creative emotional outlet is essential for our most susceptible community members for both mental and emotional health. Museum educators facilitate all program offerings.

Awaken at the AMA will provide an atmosphere that is relaxing, safe, and welcoming for visitors living with memory loss to engage with works of art and with each other in a time when social distancing makes everyday outings difficult for vulnerable members of the community. The program will bring together these visitors with their caretakers to discuss and study in our galleries with a guide and transition the conversation into hands-on engagement with artmaking. Each group will be kept isolated from other members and museum staff at all times. Not only do we feel this is important for social distancing purposes, but we also feel it is important for participants to feel uninhibited and have the undivided attention of the staff. Awaken is aimed toward those with Alzheimer’s disease who are living either in their own homes or in assisted-living facilities.

Awaken at the AMA is held on the third Thursday of each month, at 3:30 pm. Sessions are held at the Albany Museum of Art, 311 Meadowlark Drive Albany Georgia, 31707. There is no cost to attend.
